Tanzania Medicines and Medical Devices Authority (TMDA) is an Executive Agency under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGE). It was established and empowered by law in 2003 to ensure quality, safety and effectiveness of drugs. TMDA is responsible for regulating safety, quality and effectiveness of food, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices and diagnostics. TMDA main responsibility is stated in the Health policy, 2007 and its mandate is stipulated in the Tanzania Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Act (TFDCA) Cap. 219. The act provides for the efficient and comprehensive regulation and control of safety and quality of food, medicines, cosmetics, medical devices and diagnostics in Tanzania mainland.

In order to fulfill its mission of protecting and promoting public health, TMDA is organized into four(4) Directorates (Directorate Medical Products Control, Directorate Food Safety, Directorate of Laboratory Services and Directorate of Business Support) and seven(7) Zone offices (Lake Zone, Eastern Zone, Northern Zone, Southern Highlands Zone, Central Zone, Southern Zone and Western Zone). Zone offices were established with the overall aim of bringing TMDA services closer to the public for provision of better services.
